Update 1: Tropical Storm Warning for St. Kitts and Nevis
Tropical Storm Ken - 12 hours away from impacts
St Kitts and Nevis
UPDATE: Reports reaching the St. Kitts Met Services indicate Tropical Storm Ken has begun to affect St. Kitts and Nevis. Heavy showers have been experienced across the federation and the rivers are rising rapidly and are soon to breach their banks. Tropical Storm Ken is expected to cause heavy rainfall with possible rainfall totals of 4-6 inches in 12 hours; strong gusty winds at or near storm force strength (39mph) and thunderstorms. Flash flooding, landslides, river overflow, impassable roads and possible evacuations are possible due to the heavy rainfall in a short time. High turbidity to water reservoirs is likely due to the heavy downpours. Drainage capacity may become overwhelmed due the downpours and thus affecting low-lying areas. Hazardous seas are expected with waves peaking 14ft and storm surge of 5ft especially along coastal communities such as Basseterre, Old Road to New Guinea and in Dieppe Bay.
UPDATE: Residents along the banks of the rivers and low-lying areas are urged to move to higher ground and prepare for flooding in these areas. Residents are asked not to attempt crossing any flowing rivers that are crossing the roadways and to use alternate routes and avoid these waterways. Mariners are urged to secure vessels now and stay in port during the passage of the storm. Beachgoers are discouraged from venturing into the sea. Residents along the coastal areas of Old Road to New Guinea should consider evacuating ahead of the possible storm surge and rough seas. Residents in communities of Newtown and Irish Town should be cautious and consider evacuation if your homes are not considered safe and can be impacted by the rough seas overtopping the roads. Residents who are uncertain about the safety of their homes to withstand strong winds are encouraged to move to a neighbour or family, if this option is not available residents can move to hurricane shelters that are opened in advance of the storm. Residents are urged to secure all loose items in and around their properties. All construction sites should be secured ensuring that all loose items are secured. Water department is encouraged to safeguard the reservoirs by closing the intakes to the line. SKELEC and Telecommunication companies are encouraged to activate their emergency plan and brace for power outages. Farmers are encouraged to secure and or loose their animals.
