GR4_Drought Warning for SKN – Conserve Water Now
Prepare , Execute , Monitor
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Regional climate conditions including those conditions across St. Kitts and Nevis will be driven by an expected El Nino phenomenon. This El Nino phenomenon will lead to warmer conditions, especially during our summer months along with drier than normal conditions as convective activity will be dampened at times. It is important to note that most of our rain usually falls during the wet season which coincides with our hurricane season. Therefore, any reductions in rainfall during this period will affect the amount of available rain-fed water. Despite this projection, the possibility of a major rain event can occur during the wet season, but the general trend is suggesting that we are likely to experience below normal rainfall totals for the season.
Due to the projected reduction in rainfall totals, it is recommended that residents and businesses, along with all water dependent sectors, exercise water conservation activities. This will minimize the expected impacts from less than normal rainfall totals. Taking early conservation actions will be important for us to weather the expected drier than normal period ahead of us.
