Event description

Hurricane Ken is approaching St.Kitts and Nevis. Expected to impact St.Kitts in the next 8 hours. A Hurricane Warning is now in effect. Heavy rainfall is expected which can cause flash flood, landslides, impassable roads, strong hurricane force winds 80mphs with gusts up to 100mphs, possible. These winds can cause down powered lines, trees and disruption to utilities; and possible damage to infrastructure. Rough seas are expected during the passage and mariners are being asked to secure their vessels and stay in port before the seas begin to deteriorate. Residents along coastal and low-lying communities should evacuate.

- Mariners are urged to secure vessels and stay in port, during the passage of the hurricane. - Beachgoers should refrain from venturing into the sea. - Residents along the coastal areas of Old Road to New Guinea should consider evacuating ahead of the possible storm surge and rough seas. - Residents in communities of Newtown and Irish Town should be cautious and consider evacuation if your home is not considered safe. - Residents who are uncertain about the safety of their homes to withstand strong winds are encouraged to move to a nearby shelter. - Residents are urged to secure all loose items in and around properties. - Farmers are encouraged to secure and or loose their animals. - Residents are also asked to charge phones and important devices, before the storm approaches. - Ensure you have adequate emergency and medical supplies.
